Building Clear Program Goals for Nonprofits

In an era where grassroots organizing faces unprecedented challenges and scrutiny, revolutionary community leaders must articulate precise program objectives that can withstand both internal pressures and external opposition. This has become essential for our movements to not only survive but grow and thrive. Clear programmatic frameworks strengthen organizational cohesion and accountability while demonstrating to potential collaborators the tangible impact of their investment in transformative work.

Assembling Your Nonprofit Board: A Friendly Guide to Getting Started

At Mockingbird Analytics, we often support organizations with research, evaluation, and grant strategies. But recently, we've noticed a recurring theme in conversations with our clients: board challenges.

Whether it’s unclear roles, limited engagement, or struggling to recruit members at all, many nonprofits—especially newer or smaller ones—are held back by board structures that don’t quite work. And since a strong board of directors is often critical to building an organization that’s ready for funding, evaluation, and long-term success, we’re kicking off a mini blog series on how to strengthen your board from the ground up.

Starting a non-profit? Start here

What do you envision after deciding to start your nonprofit? Grateful participants shaking your hand? Ostentatiously shiny award statues being handed to you for your contributions? Lavish fundraisers, perhaps with shrimp cocktail? Before you settle in and drift off to the dull roar of thunderous applause from the loving community you’ve helped, you’ll need to do a serious reality check. Take a look through this checklist to keep your goals on track!

Starting a nonprofit? Here is how to categorize your organization

There are so many exciting facets of starting your own nonprofit: the thrill of helping people, the joy of making connections within your community, the whirlwind rush of throwing a fundraising event… the list goes on and on. However, we’re going to go ahead and assume your personal list doesn’t include red tape, taxes, or the IRS. It’s just a guess – correct us if you’re wild about audits!

A Tale of Two Models: Fiscal Sponsorship

Fiscal sponsorship is sort of like a big brother or big sister lending their bike to a younger sibling who wants to bike over to a taco stand. The older sibling (fiscal sponsor) lets their younger sibling take their bike out so they can get to the tacos more quickly. However, the older sibling is the owner of said bike and liable for all repairs and what happens to it. The older sibling also might request that the little sibling bring them back a taco (a small fee for services). This is the simplified way to explain fiscal sponsorship.

Navigating Nonprofit Startup Challenges: What New Organizations Need to Know

That reality is rarely stated plainly, and too many founders internalize the difficulty as personal failure rather than structural truth. Join us in a conversation to name the main challenges early-stage organizations face, explain why they exist, and offer grounded guidance for navigating the startup phase without burning out or risking compliance trouble.

Meet Indigenous Roots Productions, Spring 2025 Mockingbird Seed Grant Recipient

From our Spring 2025 Nonprofit Incubator Program, we’re shining a spotlight on Samuel (Shmuel) Tamo, Founder & Executive Director of Indigenous Roots Productions. Indigenous Roots Productions (IRP) is a nonprofit organization that amplifies the self-empowerment of Indigenous communities around the world through collaborative oral history, research, filmmaking, and folkloric music production. IRP supports oral history and folkloric music, among the oldest shared cultural traditions, which offer a window into the values and worldviews of our ancestors. Film and music production provide avenues for Indigenous communities to teach others about their way of life while archiving their stories for preservation. IRP partners with Indigenous communities by facilitating the production and distribution of stories told by communities themselves. The research revealing these stories is supported by consistent, appropriate methodology and theory, producing a database of qualitative, diverse samples. Films and music produced by IRP and partner communities can help relieve these cultures from the obscurity that leads to marginalization.
